Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery

1. Introduction of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department
The Hepatobiliary Surgery Department of Chinese PLA Air Force General Hospital was founded in 1995. Through the development of nearly two decades, our department has developed into the micro-traumatic- intervention center of the Chinese PLA Medical System, and been famous for its advanced technology in the field of hepatobiliary surgery.
Our department is consists of two sub-departments and contains 75 beds. Over 2000 patients are hospitalized and over 1500 operations are performed in this department per year. Dr. Zhang Hongyi is in charge of this department and leads a specific team with expertise. We firstly performed a series of difficult operations in Beijing, including the precise surgery of hepatic portal cholangiocarcinoma, precise resection of hepatic middle lobe and caudate lobe, radical resection of pancreatic head carcinoma, and operation of portal-systemic shunt under portal hypertension. The percentage of radical resection during laparotomy for patients with malignant tumor can reach 90%, and the successful rate of the operation can reach 95%.  Micro-traumatic surgery formed as a new method in the field of abdominal surgery and has been developed a lot in our department. On the basis of over 10000 cases of successful laparoscopic cholecystectomy, we also use laparoscope to perform operations on patients with common bile duct stone, acute pancreatitis, hepatic tumor or portal hypertension, and have performed over 500 cases. In the recent decade, our department has used the therapy of sequential and precise surgical methods to treat hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancer in advanced stage, including ablation guided by ultrasound, TACE, and PTCD. Especially the method with combination of ablation in biliary tract and PTCD has obviously improved the life quality of those patients with biliary carcinoma in advanced stage. On the basis of conventional TIPSS to treat upper digestive tract bleeding and incurable ascites, we performed precise TIPSS guided by CT and improved the successful rate and overall outcome. The therapeutic schedule of each patient will be checked and supervised by the chief surgeon himself.
Clinical work, medical teaching and scientific research are equally emphasized in our department. Up to now, we have published more than 20 English articles and achieved more than 10 research funds with more than one million Yuan. Our department is also the workstation for pursuing postdoctoral scientific research, doctorial degree awarding unit of PLA Medical College and Anhui Medical College, and master degree awarding unit of Dalian Medical College and Anhui Medical College.
