The Department of Neurosurgery

1.Basic Information
  The Department of Neurosurgery was established in 1954 when the General Hospital of the Air Force was founded. With the warming up of all kinds of technologies such as imaging technology, microscopic surgery, microneurosurgical technique, the department has developed greatly and entered a booming time. The conventional treatment of craniotomy procedures for cranial injuries, brain haematoma and superficial brain tumors ,new approaches of microneurosurgery, fibrescope utilized in neurosurgical procedures, and stereotactic radiotherapy bring great benefits to patients suffering from all kinds of neurosurgical diseases.
  There are 20 staff members working for the department, among whom,5 persons hold senior professional titles, 4 persons are doctorial degree owners, and 2 persons are master’s degree owners. The department has 34 patient beds. Every year, there are more than 1,600 outpatient visits, 500 inpatients and 300 operations. Cheng Gang-ge, male, with a senior professional title, is the director of the department.
  Many techniques have been carried out earlier in the domestic neurosurgery field, such as ventriculo-atrial shunt, transnasal approach to the sphenoidal sinus, stereotactic radiosurgery, intra-operative chemotherapy & radiotherapy for brain tumors, treatments for cerebral arteriovenous malformations and aneurysms via cerebral interventional treatment, preoperative ultraselective tumor arterial embolization & endovascular chemotherapy ,and so on. In the 1990s, we treat Parkinson’s disease through stereotactic microelectrode successfully. In recent years ,minimally invasive procedures have been utilized in the treatments of cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral vascular ischemia. We have carried out cerebral haematoma aspiration & u-PA、rTPA chemical dissolving skill via stereotactic navigation,carotid endarterectomy, and basilar endarterectomy, which was the first case at home. Satisfactory outcome has been obtained in the treatment of carotid stenosis via endovascular stent placement. We have carried out minimally invasive neurosurgery, and have performed about 30 transsphenoidal operations of pituitary adenoma under ventricular endoscope, and the outcome is quite encouraging. We have completed more than 100 cases of intracranial aneurysm clipping and intracranial aneurysm embolization, about 300 cases of skull base tumor resection, which is a milestone in complex microscopic neurosurgery. We have completed more than 200 cases via microvascular decompression of trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, with a total effective rate of 98%.
  We have one intensive care unit equipped with advanced monitoring equipments, and one stereotactic operating room in the ward. We have a comprehensive multidisciplinary medical monitoring system which can meet the need of most neurosurgical diseases. We have one room for cerebral catheter angiography, which can meet the need of diagnosis and treatment of cerebral vascular diseases in neurosurgery. We have two operating rooms for various neurosurgical procedures.

2.Medical Predominance

  2)carotid endarterectomy, basilar endarterectomy for ischemia cerebrovascular diseases
  3)transsphenoidal operation of pituitary adenoma via the ventricular endoscope
  4)intracranial aneurysm clipping and intracranial aneurysm embolization
  5)microvascular decompression of trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, glossopharyngeal neuralgia
  6)treatment of Parkinson’s disease via stereotactic navigation system

3.Scientific Research and Teaching

  Our department has made great progress in technology and medical research. Our department was one division of the air force medical school of continuing education, and our department was approved to be the training base for interns from the 4th Military Medical University,2nd Military Medical University and 3rd Military Medical University, China Medical University, and Xin Xiang Medical University. The department has been honored with 6 army awards for scientific and technological innovation .
